If you're serious about your dancing, you should also be serious about taking precautions against injuries. A little common sense and prevention can go a long way. In dancing, and other sports, the knee takes a lot of abuse. The most frequently injured ligament of the knee is the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) . Ligament tears are among the most serious type of knee injury often resulting in instability of the joint.

The knee is like a hinge joint, which bends and straightens but also allows small amounts of rotation. Unlike the hip, the knee does not have a deep socket to hold the bone in place, so most of its stability is provided by the surrounding ligaments. The ACL’s main job is to prevent the shinbone from sliding forward. Sudden forceful moves causes the shin to move forward excessively on the femur (thigh bone) causing the ACL to tear. Quick action on the hamstring can possibly decrease the strain on the ACL, protecting it from damage. Muscle fatigue appears to induce deterioration which is one of the reasons why injuries are more likely to happen when muscles are tired and overworked. some tears can be treated non-surgically, however surgery is often your only option.

What can you do to prevent this? Warming up and cooling down is crucial. Preventive exercises include broad jumps, single leg hopping, and 180 degree broad jumps.

As Always...Happy Dancing!
